We have 13 rooms and normally have a waiting list for families,” Wilkerson said. The RMHCC is currently raising funds to construct a new house.

Andrew was born premature and had to spend 3 weeks in the neonatal unit due to poorly performing lungs. Jayme got to see her new son for roughly 10 seconds before radical hysterectomy surgery began. With her husband and Andrew being rushed to the neonatal unit in Macon, Ga the surgeons began to surgically remove the cancer. A radical hysterectomy was performed and Andrew’s lungs developed strong enough for him to return 3 weeks later.

Scan immediately after Jayme’s surgery showed that the surgery was a success. 3 months after this, unfortunately, the cancer came back and Jayme began chemotherapy treatments combined with 52 localized radiation treatments.

Initial reports showed that all the cancer was removed and that no other areas were showing across her body. The family enjoyed 3 months of peace while her body repaired itself but were quickly called back in to be told the cancer had returned to 2 lower lymph nodes in the pelvic region.

We were devastated. Simply devastated at this point. Our entire family savings had been evaporated and family loans were quickly being evaporated with the treatments, childcare, transportation to treatments and of course the loss of 2 incomes. We have lost everything but have 3 healthy sons name Joey, Sam (Cash) and Andrew. They are all doing very well.

Jayme Barbee has a heart of gold and a spirit that is determined to beat cancer. Since she found her cancer had returned she has completed additional chemotherapy treatments, cryoablation (freezing of the cancer tumor) and has spent a nearly combined 4 months in and out of the hospital dealing with kidney failure and heartbreaking and painful fistulas . At the time of writing this document 12/09/12 Jayme Barbee is in the hospital at St Josephs in Atlanta batteling and repairing the pelvic fistulas that are now requiring major surgeries. Jayme has currently been in the hospital for nearly 2 months straight and cannot hold or play with the children she loves so much.

Jayme is 34 years old.

United Way of South Central Georgia partners with Autowranglers in national campaign

United Way of South Central Georgia (UWSCGA) is an affiliate of United Way Worldwide, one of more than 1,200 such local affiliates in the United States. Like most local United Ways, UWSCGA has traditionally received most of its revenue through a fall pledge drive and contributions campaign.

“Most folks are as generous as they can be,” said UWSCGA Executive Director Greg Millette. “Given the economy, though, money has tightened for everyone and, like many nonprofits, we have certainly seen an impact in donation levels.”

United Ways across the country are focused on advancing the common good by mobilizing the caring power of communities, and UWSCGA is no exception, providing support and partnership to agencies across the five-county service region of Ben Hill, Cook, Irwin, Tift and Turner.

“Our goal is to help drive the positive impacts of education, income and health in South Central Georgia.  By doing so, everyone benefits as the tax base rises, jail usage falls, people find gainful employment and there are fewer people needing medical services because of poor choices,” Millette continued.

As an important tool in driving these goals, UWSCGA distributes monthly funding to a variety of groups, including the Backpack Buddies program in Turner County, Boys & Girls Club of Cook County, Christian Kitchen (soup kitchen) in Ben Hill and Literacy Volunteers GED program in Tift. In addition, UWSCGA has provided one-time grants to help underwrite a variety of short-term projects related to projects such as early literacy, teen health and after-school learning.

“As traditional donations have dropped in this economy, we have begun seeking additional sources of revenue,” said Millette.

The remaining 5 percent will cover UWSCGA administrative costs.
